Our purpose is to enable countries to share and learn about effective, field-tested techniques and solutions. We work closely with our members to document the problem addressed, for whom, the primary actions, how they achieved results, and the solution they achieved.     Mainstreaming Gender into Jamaica’s National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan 2016-2021

    Women contribute to biodiversity conservation and management in fundamentally important ways. Their role has been underscored in several decisions of the Conference of Parties (CoP) to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), and the CBD’s 2015-2020 Gender Plan of Action. Previously, gender was absent from Jamaica’s National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan (NBSAP) of 2003. However, Jamaica’s latest NBSAP 2016-2021 includes gender considerations into biodiversity conservation actions and cross-sectoral strategies.

    Chagra's Fairs In The Colombian Amazon As An Alternative To Protect Agricultural Biodiversity And Traditional Knowledge: The Case of Tarapaca’s Indigenous Communities

    In the Colombian Amazon, indigenous groups, women's organizations, the Sinchi Amazon Institute of Scientific Research, and the Ministry of Environment, implement Chagra’s Fairs (local name given to Agrobiodiversity Fairs) to empower initiatives based on principles of solidarity economy and traditional knowledge as an alternative to extractive economies that have historically operated in the region.

    The Sagana Women’s Group was formed in 1977 by a group of women who wanted to address basic issues that affected them and their families, such as housing, water supply, education and poverty alleviation. The group also wanted to engage the local community in environmental conservation activities, and improve livelihoods by establishing a sustainable environmental conservation enterprise. The Sagana Fish and Bee Keeping Women Self Help Group started the 'Sagana Fish Farming Project' in 2003, with the financial support of the GEF.

    Researchers and practitioners have extensively discussed the potential of Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD+) strategies to help or harm forest-based communities, but less attention has been paid to the gender dimensions of this conservation intervention. Safeguard policies aim to ensure that REDD+ does not harm women, but interventions that do not seek to address gender imbalances at the outset could end up perpetuating them.

Through ESN, Protected Areas (PAs) can access relevant skills within businesses & build constructive dialogue on the need to manage environmental impacts. Through ESN, businesses can identify solutions to pressures on natural resources & nurture sustainable business leadership.

    Building Negotiation Skills In Support Of Sustainable Land And Resource Use Solutions In And Around Protected Areas In Africa

    The Mutual Gains Approach (MGA) to negotiation is a process model that is based on experimental findings and hundreds of real-world cases for negotiating better outcomes for each involved party, while protecting relationships and reputation. A central tenet of the model, and the robust theory that underlies it, is that a vast majority of negotiations in the real world involve parties who have more than one goal or concern in mind, and more than one issue that can be addressed in the agreement they reach.

    Embed Tailored And Fully Consulted Mitigation Measures Into A Project’s EMP That Accurately Reflect Due Consideration Of Potential PA Impacts

    To address the emerging shortage of bulk water supply to Maputo and surrounding areas, the project handled the protected area concern by including a number of project implementation measures in the EMP to mitigate the potential adverse impacts on the protected area, including: an inundation preparation plan, reservoir management program, environmental water release regime, anti-poaching measures and environmental monitoring plan.
