Threats to indigenous territories by the exploration or encroachment of an extractive industry can lead to potential fractious outcomes. At the other end of the spectrum, Payment for Environment Services opportunities can similarly result in conflict, or if delivered correctly, a significant opportunity. It is critical for communities to manage these situations using effective conflict resolution strategies and negotiation skills. We discuss practical tools for indigenous and local communities to use to safeguard their land and territories.
