There are instances where tourism can support conservation efforts. Environmental certification, if appropriately designed for the Pacific region, could direct tourism development in the right direction. The proposed Blue Star environmental tourism certification is being developed with the Pacific in mind.
Whereas there is concern with the impact of tourism on protected areas, we should be as concerned with the impact of tourism on non-protected areas, particularly since these constitute most of our land and marine environment. With tourism's growth potential in the Pacific, it is crucial that this is done in an environmentally sensitive way, not just for the environment, but also for the long-term viability of the tourism industry itself.
A certification scheme is being developed.
The solution is still at proposal stage. Results will be added at a later time.
