Many migratory birds begin their odyssey in the North American prairies, ending in the wintering sites of the Pampas grasslands. Also called the ‘Southern Cone’, these grasslands naturally extend across the entire territory of Uruguay, and parts of Argentina, Brazil and Paraguay. Despite being of global importance for biodiversity, around 60% of their area has been replaced with other land uses.

In Europe, as in the rest of the world, human activities are causing rapid biodiversity loss. Over the last two decades, the EU has been trying to tackle this in various ways, including through the Natura 2000 Network of protected areas. This includes over 27 000 protected areas, covering over million km2, making it the largest coordinated network of protected areas in the world. The Natura 2000 Network creates a framework for mainstreaming conservation into a range of sectors. The European Commission led the development of the Natura 2000 Network.
In the Colombian Amazon, indigenous groups, women's organizations, the Sinchi Amazon Institute of Scientific Research, and the Ministry of Environment, implement Chagra’s Fairs (local name given to Agrobiodiversity Fairs) to empower initiatives based on principles of solidarity economy and traditional knowledge as an alternative to extractive economies that have historically operated in the region.
During the “Urban National Parks in Emerging Countries” (UNPEC) research program, funded by the ANR (the french National Research Agency), the Urban Protected Areas Network have worked in partnership with the national parks and the cities in Rio, Cape Town, Mumbai, Nairobi. We have identified three main types of park’s dynamics:
Many migratory soaring birds journey between Europe, Western and Central Asia and Africa. They face unsustainable levels of hunting in many countries along their route, including Syria and Lebanon. Tackling hunting is one element of the Migratory Soaring Birds (MSB) Project, which addresses a range of threats to these birds from economic sectors along the Red Sea/Rift Valley Flyway. The aim is to promote the principles of responsible hunting, including within legislation, in order to minimize impacts on populations of migratory soaring birds.
Researchers and practitioners have extensively discussed the potential of Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD+) strategies to help or harm forest-based communities, but less attention has been paid to the gender dimensions of this conservation intervention. Safeguard policies aim to ensure that REDD+ does not harm women, but interventions that do not seek to address gender imbalances at the outset could end up perpetuating them.
There are instances where tourism can support conservation efforts. Environmental certification, if appropriately designed for the Pacific region, could direct tourism development in the right direction. The proposed Blue Star environmental tourism certification is being developed with the Pacific in mind.
Due to the devastation of powerful typhoon Ketsana, known in the Philippines as Tropical Storm Ondoy, Philippine President Benigno S. Aquino III issued Proclamation 296, declaring the Upper Marikina River Basin Protected Landscape (UMRBPL) as a protected area (PA) under the National Integrated Protected Areas System (NIPAS), covering an area of 26,125.64 hectares (100.87 sq. miles).
The proclaimed PA is now undergoing rehabilitation where more than 10,000 hectares (24,710 acres) has been tree-planted
Protected areas are one of the most direct, cost-effective way of simultaneously achieving societal goals of conserving biodiversity, tackling development challenges and fostering climate resilience.
