Recently, a lengthy process of negotiation between timber and conservation interests led to a significant change in a decades long conflict over the use of public forests in Tasmania. An agreement was reached to protect significant additional areas of forest through industry consolidation, with support from all parties. After years of costly and divisive conflict through social, political and market lobbying and campaigning, an alternative approach of direct negotiation between the main stakeholders was undertaken.

UNDP and the Government of Seychelles are implementing an ambitious conservation programme in Seychelles, funded primarily by the GEF with help from other partners. Two projects of a very specific nature stand out. A new UNDP-GEF protected area finance project aims to improve the financial sustainability and strategic cohesion of Seychelles’ protected area system, while also dealing with emerging threats and risks to biodiversity in a shifting national economic environment.
This case study discusses the great potential connectivity outcomes when development offsets are required in a landscape which has a foundation of groups committed towards achieving a conservation “corridor”. In this example, the development was the loss of vegetation required for the duplication of the Hume Highway (by Roads and Maritime NSW) and the “corridor” is the priority landscape of the Slopes to Summit partnership (within the Great Eastern Ranges Initiative area) in southern NSW.
We will highlight experiences doing research in the Makira Natural Park, northeastern Madagascar that investigated the ecosystem provisioning service value of wildlife as food and botanical ethnomedicines. Understanding the monetary value of faunal and floral biodiversity in this region may help to understand the local conservation psychology and what motivates people to harvest beyond the limits of sustainability. Specifically, our results provide an estimate of the cost of offsetting economic losses to local populations from the enforcement of conservation policies.

Established a community-based resource management programme for an isolated fishing community on Kia Island in the Northern Fiji sitting on the Great Sea Reef (GSR) of local, regional and global significance being the third largest reef system in the world. Having perceived the current state of poor management of the marine protected area by the people of Macuata province, Reef Rangers was developed to increase education and awareness on Kia and later to communities beyond.
The System Plan for Thailand’s PAs is designed to enable the nation’s 370+protected sites to function as a coherent system that puts the entire network into its broader social, cultural, economic, and environmental context. It shows how to integrate protected areas into the 2012-2016 National Economic and Social Development Plan by communicating the multiple values of protected areas to national planning agencies, and to the many sectors whose activities can affect protected areas, or be affected by them.
Alternative production systems such as pastures with trees, live fences, agroforestry and silvopastoral systems represent a significant potential as a strategy to mitigate the environmental impact of cattle ranching, to improve productivity, promote product diversification on farms, conservation biodiversity and contribute to adaptation and mitigation of climate change.
